This week I was reminded how much of a price difference there is between buying books in local bookstores and ordering them online. I happened to pass by an outlet of a local bookstore chain, which had a 1-for-1 sale on most books. Of course I couldn’t pass up on such a great bargain, or so I thought.
Negative Book Reviews Minus the Negativity
Debates abound about whether or not negative book reviews should be written. There are moves towards banning negative book reviews, while others believe in the value of negative book reviews.
Retrospect #21: May 25th
My weeks feel like they’re melding into one another, so I sometimes forget what happened exactly when. Looking back on the past week, I’m not so sure anymore what did happen then and what actually happened the week before that. I think it is time I introduce structure into my life again, instead of going with the flow. Even when it comes to reading, I’m completely losing my overview. A change of pace will probably kick some zest into my life again.
Ebooks Are Real
It’s not unusual to refer to a hardcover or a paperback as a real book. Typically, that is done vis-à-vis ebooks. However, I don’t agree with the reference to real books in that context. In fact, it irks me every time I hear someone speak so flippantly about real books because in my opinion, it’s a blatant dismissal of the reality of ebooks.
Retrospect #20: May 18th
This week I remembered the difference between semi-sweet and non-sweetened chocolate when baking. I meant to bake brownies for my sister because she asked me to bake a batch. Generally, I reduce the sugar content for all the recipes I use. Now, the recipe that I referred to didn’t state non-sweetened chocolate. Smart as I was, I still went ahead to reduce the sugar content by half. I ended up with something that is much more akin to very dark chocolate squares. Thankfully I poured chocolate chips into the batter, so my non-brownies still ended up balanced. Nonetheless, I think the recipe I ended up with is not for anyone who has a cocoa content threshold level below 75%.
