One thing to be said about Beauty Queens is that it’s way over the top. As much as many have referred to the book as satire, I think it got lost in trying too hard to be funny. Some events were just so ludicrous, they were too far removed from social commentary. Maybe it’s because of that that I was hard pressed to enjoy Beauty Queens. “Give it a chance. Things will get better after a while,” I kept thinking. Things didn’t get better—at least not in my opinion.
Retrospect #31: August 3rd
A few books I ordered from The Book Depository finally found their way into my mailbox after being en route for almost three weeks. I’ve come to a point where I’m surprised whenever I find books in my mailbox rather than disappointed that they haven’t arrived yet. It used to take a little over a week for books to arrive, while now it’s closer to three weeks. For one, it takes longer till the books ship out and for another, shipping itself also seems to be taking longer. Why that is, I don’t know.
Book Cover Culture #1
The book I decided to look at for the first round of Book Cover Culture is The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Café by Mary Simses. I hadn’t actually heard of this book before but the German cover caught my eye when I was looking for ebooks on Onleihe (the German equivalent of Overdrive). Der Sommer der Blaubeeren literally translates as The Summer of the Blueberries.
Never Without a Book, Always a Book in My Bag
Rarely do I leave the house without a book. Since the age of 9 or 10, I’ve always had a book with me wherever I went. In fact, I wouldn’t feel complete without a book. I remember how my mother used to scold me about adding unnecessary weight to my bag. It didn’t matter if I had five textbooks to carry for school; a book to read for personal enjoyment always had space. That extra weight never is unnecessary. I always need to have a book in my bag.
