Mise-en-scène: Movie Tie-in

November 13, 2015

Movie tie-in cover of If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Movie-tie in covers aren’t exactly my thing. I’m far from a movie buff. This year I’ve probably been to the cinema only once; twice at most. Yes, I did watch Insurgent and Paper Towns but only because no other movies caught my interest on my long haul flight back home from Europe. Needless to say, I don’t own any books with movie tie-in covers. The closes to it is my copy of Divergent which has an ugly sticker on it announcing the movie. Those stickers are exceedingly annoying and spoil good cover designs.

When I sat down to think about book covers based on their movie adaptions, the most memorable one that came to mind was If I Stay by Gayle Forman. I love the white framing with the photographic snippets. This is the one movie tie-in cover I was tempted to get. In the end I didn’t though because I already own a German edition of the book, which I have yet to read. In case you’re wondering, no, I’ve not seen the movie either. I will after I read the book.

How do you feel about movie tie-in covers? What’re some of your favourites?

I love, love this movie tie-in, actually! As you said, the concept is awesome, and I love how it ties in all the other aspects of the book as well.

I’m not a fan of movie-tie-in covers either! I think it’s the inner book snob in me (like HEY, I READ THAT BOOK BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT), haha.

But I have to admit that If I Stay was comparatively better than any of the other movie-tie-in covers (looking at you Paper Towns/TFiOS/Maze Runner).

GOD, GIRL YOUR BLOG PHOTOGRAPHY THOUGH. <3

100% agree! I generally hate movie-tie-in covers with a passion. Very rarely will I like the movie version than the original cover. I do like this cover, but I can’t recall the original since I’ve never read it.

I’m personally not a fan of movie tie-in covers. I don’t think I’ve purchased one in years either. The movie tie-in cover for IF I STAY is a pretty good one though. The photographic snippets does draw my attention much more than the typical movie tie-in covers. I still don’t think I’d purchase it though.

I quite enjoyed IF I STAY, both as a book and as a film! I do like the way this cover looks too :)
