Mise-en-scène #15: Playlists

May 8, 2015

Mise-en-scene Playlists - On the Road by Jack Kerouac

Music in my life is as random as books. Just like I don’t have a fixed reading plan to tackle my TBR pile, I don’t have fixed playlists to get me through the day. Genre-wise I’m not as concerned either, as long as I enjoy the music. I tend to shuffle a random collection of songs. If I’m in a particular mood, I pick an album or artist. More often than not, that leads me right back to the Backstreet Boys.

Other than that, I have a huge preference for acoustic music, so I did compile playlists containing covers — one for acoustic and one for instrumental. When I’m reading I like to plug in the instrumental covers, so I can concentrate on the words I’m reading.

Although, during commutes, I pick whatever music can drown out the noise of the surrounding people. Nothing pulls me out of a book quicker than someone screaming into their mobile phone or children running around and squealing in the subway.

Do you have any playlists you specifically listen to while reading?

Mise-en-scène is a weekly feature/meme that Georgie and I created to challenge ourselves in (bookish) photography.

I love this meme! I’d love to participate in this weeks challenge. Will you be posting on Friday? I noticed you didn’t have one last week.

Hi Rosie, yes, we will continue this week! But my post will go up on Saturday because I’m travelling and didn’t have a chance to schedule my photos in advance. I look forward to your participation! :)

I actually just randomly listen to the first album I see on my library lol. I never thought of making any playlists for reading because I’m more of a quiet reader. But that doesn’t mean I enjoy music in the background though I keep it a moderate volume to concentrate.

Yes to Backstreet Boys! I grew up with their songs so I’m attached! :P
I listen to rock or acoustic (maybe some jazz) in general. And while reading (especially around people), I have my “Very Loud” playlist to drown out the conversation around me.
Ooh, I love instrumental music, though very few songs. I’m trying to find more similar to the ones I like.

Yes! BSB is essential to any music collection! Haha. Spotify has a lot of great stuff. That’s where I discover a lot of my music at least.

I don’t usually listen to any of my playlists. Like you I usually just put all of my music on shuffle. I make playlists on Spotify but most of them are for each month, just of songs that I’ve really been into recently so that’s nice as it offers more of a narrow selection. But yeah I don’t usually listen to playlists while I read. The only time I even listen to music when I read is on my commute; I find that the music is good to block out the sounds of babies crying as well haha :)

Spotify playlists definitely are a lot of fun and great for discovering music. Though sometimes I like looking for more obscure music, which Spotify is wonderful for as well.

I don’t generally listen to music while reading, but there are a few situations in which I might. One, if there’s a lot of other noise around me I might put on some music(usually acoustic, because I listen to a lot of acoustic & indie music anyway) to drown out more distracting noises. Or, if I’m reading an ebook on my computer. I pretty much always have some music playing while I’m at my computer, so if I’m reading a book on the kindle app or through adobe digital editions & there’s silence, that’s more distracting than anything. But I tend to not listen to a whole lot of music with lyrics while reading on the computer–I generally go for Explosions in the Sky.

Honestly, I don’t even know how people can listen to music while reading. To me, lyrics are so distracting. Actually, I don’t listen to much music in general anymore. I don’t know what happened to me! I listen to the news on short trips in the car, and the rest of the time I listen to audiobooks. I’m so addicted to audiobooks, it’s a little scary.

I don’t have a playlist preference or anything either. If anything, I mostly listen to podcasts these days, actually. I only play music if I’m addicted to a song, which is why these days Beyonce’s Flawless has been played nonstop.

[…] This week I made a case for cherishing the backlist, given the hype for the newest releases that has become much fiercer as of late. In a bid to not only think about books after reading but also before, I unveiled Confess by Colleen Hoover. Of course, Georgie and I continued with our weekly book photography challenge. This week’s Mise-en-scène theme is playlists. […]
