Mise-en-scène #12: Typography

April 17, 2015

Mise-en-scene Typography with Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy

The understated elegance of these covers completely amazed me when I first saw them. Besides linking up the covers through the door, door knocker and keyhole, the typography completes the design of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy. I love how classy the letters look. They are decorative but don’t lead to overly busy covers.

My favourite cover of the lot is Dreams of Gods and Monsters, so I’m glad I waited for this edition to be published. This one was only released a couple of weeks ago. The paperback that was available from Hodder & Stoughton before that was much bigger and only featured birds. Since I’m a stickler for matching covers, I refused to buy it. Well, waiting paid off. I happily own the covers of the trilogy that I love.

Now I only need to finally read the books. Yes, I have yet to meet Karou. I will soon though, I promise! Daughter of Smoke and Bone is parked on my priority TBR shelf.

Remember to visit Georgie’s blog to see her photo. Also, if you’re participating in Mise-en-scène, be sure to leave your link to your photo in the linky widget down below!

Mise-en-scène is a weekly feature/meme that Georgie and I created to challenge ourselves in (bookish) photography.

You’re right, these books are gorgeous! I think I like these more than the US covers, which are more readily available to me. I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone (it was a mystical and awesome experience), but I haven’t read the rest of the series yet.
Fabulous photo (as usual)! Hopefully, one of these days I find time to actually participate in Mise-en-scene.

I don’t like the US covers at all. Lol. Everyone’s been telling me that DoSaB’s gonna be magical when I read it, so I’m quite excited for it :) Ooh, yes! It would be lovely to have you join us! :D

I also have these editions and my favourite of the three is definitely the first one. I’m not a fan of the second cover and it was sooo difficult to get a matching edition. There are two different formats of these small paperbacks. There are the standard ones but there are also even smaller ones. In the bookshops, they only ever had the small one, so I couldn’t buy it and it turned out to be quite a fiasco when I ordered it online. The first two copies I received from A were both damaged, the replacement even more so than the first one, so I had to send them back. Only Thalia managed to get me the right edition without damage. Still haven’t read the second and third, though. Loved the first half of the first but there was a turn of events I didn’t like that much so I haven’t continued yet.

Whoa. Where dod you order the books from that arrived damaged? That must’ve been quite disappointing for it to happen twice with the very same book! I usually order my books from TBD and make sure to check the dimensions across entire series before I decide on which editions to buy.

It was Amazon but since I’ve stopped ordering books there, I never had any trouble in the last months. English books tend to have some kind of little scratch or dent but so far, I haven’t come across something as damaged as these two.
