Tracking Bout of Books 18 — Daily updates of reading progress & challenges

It’s read-a-thon week with the 18th round of Bout of Books! I’m gonna update this space throughout the week with my challenge responses and reading progress.

Challenges

Day 1, Jan 2

Much more determined this time round. #insixwords #boutofbooks

Day 3, Jan 4

I desperately want to see Caraval by @SGarberGirl on the big screen. The experience would surely be magical. #BoBBookToMovie #boutofbooks pic.twitter.com/Yb4K2dKoox

Day 4, Jan 5

Y'all probably know how much I love book spine poetry, so when I saw the #boutofbooks challenge, #bookspinepoetrybob, of course I was excited! As always, I only allowed myself to add punctuations but no words (not even conjunctions). To make it harder, I restricted myself to paperbacks I own that are of the same height. This is what I came up with:⠀ ⠀ Night Owls⠀ ⠀ Tonight the streets are ours.⠀ Lovely, dark and deep,⠀ London belongs to us.⠀ ⠀ A gathering of shadows —⠀ trouble makes a comeback.⠀ All the bright places —⠀ beautiful, broken things.

Reading Progress

Day 1, Jan 2

Finished: A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard

Started & Finished: Written in the Stars by Aisha Saeed

Started: The Chimes by Anna Smaill

Pages read: 486

Today was a public holiday here in Singapore, so I had quite a bit of time to read. I started A Quiet Kind of Thunder yesterday already, so I decided to finish it first before carrying on with my planned TBR pile.

Day 2, Jan 3

Paperback of The Chimes on a shelf

Continued: The Chimes by Anna Smaill

Pages read: 42

So far The Chimes has been rather confusing. I only know what’s going on because of the synopsis and tanning through various reviews on Goodreads. Apparently others have felt this way too, though, and it supposedly gets better.

Day 3, Jan 4

Spread from Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier

Continued: The Chimes by Anna Smaill

Started & Finished: Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier

Pages read: 285

The Chimes still didn’t grip me. I’m really sad about that because I went into this book expecting to discover a new favourite. The synopsis made the book sound like it was written for me. Progress was so slow, I decided to take a break and read Raina Telgemeier’s latest graphic novel. I love her style, so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. I wasn’t. I absolutely loved Ghosts!

Day 4, Jan 5

Paperback of The Chimes and sweaters

Finished: The Chimes by Anna Smaill

Started: The Special Ones by Em Bailey

Pages read: 264

I’m relieved that I finished The Chimes. This book left a void in my mind. I read so many words but nothing would make sense. Anyway, I jumped into my next book at night. Apparently The Special Ones is a thriller, which isn’t a go-to genre of mine. But it involves a cult, so I was intrigued when I was offered a copy for review.

Day 5, Jan 6

Continued: The Special Ones by Em Bailey

Pages read: 173

The Special Ones is rather disturbing but nail-biting too. A lot of that made me shudder and my eyes pop. While a lot of this is expected in thrillers and novels with cults, this still gets me every time.
