Same Voice — A Problem with Audiobook Narration

Different audiobooks narrated by Julia Whelan, giving protagonists the same voicesOver the past year I’ve come to listen to an average of four audiobooks per month. This year alone about a third of the books I’ve read were audiobooks. The more I listen, the more narrators I come across as well. I’ve reached a point where I can recognize a lot of the voices I’ve heard narrating. Once in a while, I notice the same voices. That’s where my problems begin.

Ebook of Drama by Raina Telgemeier behind barsWho would’ve thought that I of all people would chance upon a book that is under review by the National Library Board (NLB), Singapore? I certainly didn’t think I would — not after 14 years of patronising the public libraries here and almost always finding what I looked for. Occasionally books weren’t in the catalogue at all and I could guess which themes were potentially “questionable”.

I had been on Instagram since the beginning of 2011 but only discovered the bookish community last year after following a couple of book bloggers with my personal account. After very little debate with myself, I decided that marrying books and photography would be a great idea. For the most part I’m very glad I became a bookstagrammer.

Well, it’s the most accurate term I could think of to describe the kind of reading I do every once in a while: switching among various formats while reading one particular book title. For example, right now I’m reading All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. I started with the audiobook but once in a while I switch and read the paperback.
