Retrospect #37: September 14th

Banana chocolate ice cream

Banana chocolate ice cream

In My Life

Food

Single-ingredient banana ice cream is the best! It’s so easy to make without an ice cream maker, so I’ve been experimenting with it. I especially like that it doesn’t require any addition of sugar. Plus, by making my own ice cream, I know there aren’t any preservatives or other ingredients that are questionable for health.

Anyway, this week I made chocolate ice cream with bananas as the base and it was delicious. My whole family loved it and I’ll definitely keep it in my recipe repertoire.

Reading

I achieved my Goodreads goal of reading a hundred books this year! I read 68 books last year and 30 books the year before that. This means 100 is a pretty huge deal for me. Now excuse me as I celebrate with a much deserved break reading more books!

Email Subscriptions

For those who subscribe to Word Revel via email, thank you so much! (If you don’t subscribe but want to, you can do so via the sign-up form in the footer.)

You might have noticed that you haven’t been receiving any updates over the past weeks. The RSS feed couldn’t be validated for some reason and I couldn’t figure out why. After some tinkering, I think I finally fixed it, so you should be receiving email updates again.

Although, the first daily email going out after this fix will have a ton of posts combined into it. Things will be normal again after this email update if everything really is in order.

  • Renae @ Respiring Thoughts insists on reading what she wants and not succumbing to pressures of what other people think she should read. A wise decision on her part that I think all of us should adopt.

Are you also constantly in search for healthier dessert and snack recipes? What have you found?
There is so much information that I come across each day, I sometimes find it hard to process it all. This is why I decided to post a weekly recap post of what’s been going on here on my blog and with me in general, in the blogosphere and also about books as a whole. Retrospect has been inspired by none other than the lovely Asti @ Oh, the Books! when she used to do her weekly Bookish Recaps on her original blog, A Bookish Heart.

Congrats on reaching your goal! I set mine as 50 or so this year but surpassed that a while back, so now I just want to double it. Sooooo closeeee.

About two years ago now, I pretty much cut refined sugar out of my diet so now I’m pretty much relying on fruits and whatnots to provide a natural sweetness. I love healthy snacks, although have recently been extremely slack so now I just eat primarily raw. =_=

Thank you, Jess :) I double mine the previous two years. Haha. 2012 from 15 to 30 and 2013 from 30 to 65. This year I’m not going to increase even though the year’s not coming to an end yet. But if you can, go double it. A hundred sounds like a very satisfying number :D

Wow. How do manage to stick to that? Like, what if you eat out? Does this mean you don’t eat cakes, cookies, etc or do you use substitutes like sweeteners? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. If a vegetable can be eaten raw, I’m more likely to eat it like that too instead of bothering to cook. Heh.

My sister makes these mug cakes that are gluten free and dairy free for me, and she made a pumpkin version a few nights ago. That was DELICIOUS! I’m not sure it’s low-calorie, since it still uses coconut flour and a few other ingredients, but it’s better for me because of the gluten/dairy thing. I’d have to find the recipe she uses one day and make it for myself when she’s not home :P

Congrats on reaching your reading goal, by the way!

Lol. Bananas are hardly low-calorie either. While I don’t have any specific dietary restrictions, my dad’s basically a pescetarian who eats predominantly wholemeal grains and not a lot of sugar. So if he wants to eat cake, I mostly have to bake because then I can adjust the ingredients accordingly and use maybe a fifth of the sweetness commercial cakes contain. While I never adjusted to his dietary lifestyle, I do find more and more that commercial products are too sweet and bake with less than half the amount of sugar most recipes call for even if I bake for people besides my dad. So far none of my friends noticed the reduction in sugar, which I find interesting.

Either way, you should go and find out what the recipe is! Nothing beats making your own food. For one, you feel a sense of accomplishment and for another, it’s way better for our bodies, I’m sure :)

And thank you, Kayla! :D Though you’re way ahead of me ;)

I love the banana ice cream and you don’t even have to feel bad eating it! Congrats on winning your Goodreads goal!

YES! Especially when there’re no additional ingredient. Then it’s just the fruit, which is wonderful :D Though even for the chocolate ice cream, there’s hardly any guilt in it because I merely added pure cocoa powder. And thank you :)
