My childhood favourite is Die Wilden Hühner by Cornelia Funke. I adored this book as a child and it’s the only book I re-read several times when I was younger. Most of the time I would read a book and be done with it. Re-reading books bored me — though not so with Die Wilden Hühner.
Mise-en-scène: Feminism
Too often I’ve heard people yearning for equality reject feminism. This is why I’m so glad that Sharon Biggs Waller wrote A Mad, Wicked Folly. Set during the suffragette movement it reminds us of times when women were subjected to men and didn’t have a voice. It reminds us that feminism is important to hold onto — the ideals of equality between both women and men.
Mise-en-scène: Jewellery
When it comes to jewellery, I find the best way to find balance is to pick one statement piece. For me that either means bracelets or earrings. Seeing how I like to keep things simple, more often than not, I end up matching colours. For example, if I’m wearing a green dress, I prefer to wear a green-toned bracelet or will rummage for green earrings. Once in a while when the mood strikes me, I go with contrasting colours that make everything look bolder.
Mise-en-scène: Maps
Maps are such great inclusions in books that bring their stories to life. I like being able to trace the sequence of events according to their locations. One map which I particularly was delighted about was the map of London from circa 1909 that was included in A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller.
Mise-en-scène: Lights
it comes to night time reading, my Kindle Paperwhite trumps all. I love how the screen lights up in the dark, so I can sit down on the balcony and overlook the city while reading. I love how this allows me to absorb the atmosphere of the night lights which doesn’t work so well when reading printed books.
