THE BIG LIE by Julie Mayhew

September 17, 2015

Book cover of THE BIG LIE by Julie MayhewSet in Nazi England, 2012–2014, The Big Lie is premised on one question: What if the Nazis had won World War II? With this in mind, The Big Lie is a speculative work of alternative history. While nobody can say for sure how things would’ve turned out, I think the world that Julie Mayhew imagined is a rather plausible outcome. She evidently did her research and wove together the fascist ideals and lifestyles of the 1940s with contemporary ones.

Same Voice — A Problem with Audiobook Narration

September 15, 2015

Different audiobooks narrated by Julia Whelan, giving protagonists the same voicesOver the past year I’ve come to listen to an average of four audiobooks per month. This year alone about a third of the books I’ve read were audiobooks. The more I listen, the more narrators I come across as well. I’ve reached a point where I can recognize a lot of the voices I’ve heard narrating. Once in a while, I notice the same voices. That’s where my problems begin.

THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald

September 14, 2015

Book cover of THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott FitzgeraldI am so glad I didn’t study English Literature at A Levels. The Great Gatsby was a set text for the exams and after finally reading this novel, I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed taking it apart. I have a friend who absolutely adored The Great Gatsby back then and still avidly references it in his conversations with people. Frankly, I don’t see the appeal.

Retrospect #89: September 13

September 13, 2015

This week's book haul stackAfter weeks of talking about it, Elaine, Tory and I finally met up. We had coffee and traded a couple of our books. I happily got rid of my copy of A Court of Thorns and Roses. Can’t wait to hear what the two of them think of the book when they get down to reading it.

Mise-en-scène: Thirst Quencher

September 11, 2015

Hardcover of Immaculate by Katelyn Detweiler and Ginger BeerMy favourite drinks are apple juice, grape juice and tea. Once in a while I turn to a different sort of thirst quencher. I hardly ever drink soft drinks but I am kinda partial towards chilled ginger beer. It’s so wonderfully refreshing on a hot day—perfect for sitting on the balcony and reading a book. Sometimes I grab a coffee, usually cold but occasionally hot to add some cheer to rainy Monsoon days.
