A DEADLY EDUCATION by Naomi Novik

January 13, 2021

Book cover & 2-star rating - A Deadly Education by Naomi NovikA Deadly Education left me with very mixed feelings. The opening line held so much promise. It offered conflict and an intriguing dichotomy right from the get-go. Such as, why would anyone want to kill the very person who’d saved their life? What more when they had saved them more than once? I wanted answers but didn’t feel like I got much by the end of the book. Is this one premise supposed to span across the entire series? Evidently, but the opening of the story arc for it didn’t turn out as solidly as I had hoped.

BLUESCREEN by Dan Wells

March 10, 2016

Book cover & rating - Bluescreen by Dan WellsBluescreen was a fast-paced mystery rooted in science fiction. Set in the near future, the setting felt immediate yet very much more advanced. A lot of the communication technology and technology as a whole reflected current imaginations of what could be possible in a couple of decades. I thought Bluescreen tapped on that technological knowledge very well and injected some creativity as well.

MORE HAPPY THAN NOT by Adam Silvera

March 2, 2016

Audiobook cover & rating - MORE HAPPY THAN NOT by Adam SilveraFor the month of February Hazel picked More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera as her book recommendation for me to read. What made this round of Epic Recs different was that we specifically chose to go with audiobooks. This also meant that for once we didn’t pick books the other already owned, and so had free rein.

MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Book cover & rating - MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE by Taylor Jenkins Reid

After Why?, I’m certain the most popular question is, What if? Second-guessing our choices is human nature. Maybe in Another Life taps precisely on this. What if Hannah chooses to do one thing? What is she goes with the alternative instead? Maybe in Another Life presents two options and how they could possibly turn out differently. These alternative outcomes are told though concurrent storylines.

ASSASSIN’S HEART by Sarah Ahiers

February 10, 2016

Book cover & rating - Assassin's Heart by Sara AhiersAssassin’s Heart wasn’t a book that I had prioritised to read. The reason I got to it so soon after publication was that I had the maximum 6 credits on my Audible account. In order not to forfeit any credits, I had to spend one before the new cycle. Since Assassin’s Heart was the only book available as an audiobook from my TBR (to be read) pile among the titles I didn’t own, I went for it. Essentially, I went in without any set expectations.
