VENGEFUL by V.E. Schwab

December 26, 2018

Book cover & 5-star rating - VENGEFUL by V.E. SchwabWhen I first heard that Vicious, a book that was published as a standalone, was going to have a sequel, I wasn’t all too excited. I didn’t think it needed a sequel. Plus, I didn’t want to be disappointed by yet another title shoved into a series that it wasn’t supposed to be a part of.

BECAUSE YOU LOVE TO HATE ME edited by Ameriie

Book cover & rating - BECAUSE YOU LOVE TO HATE ME edited by Ameriie
When I first heard of this anthology, Because You Love to Hate Me, I was extremely excited. The idea sounded so enticing and I couldn’t wait to see how the various authors would approach their prompts. With so many great people working on this, I couldn’t wait to be wowed. Needless to say, this belonged to my most anticipated reads of 2017. Sadly, I walked away with mixed feelings.

SPELLSLINGER by Sebastien de Castell

June 7, 2017

Book cover & rating - Spellslinger by Sebastien de CastellSpellslinger is a rather quirky book, which I enjoyed very much. A young mage who’s struggling with magic, a traveller passing through who can’t keep her hilarious social commentary to herself, and a snarky talking squirrel cat? This combination was most peculiar, making me laugh and smirk throughout.

A GATHERING OF SHADOWS by V.E. Schwab

May 31, 2017

Book cover & rating - A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

A Gathering of Shadows is much more intense than A Darker Shade of Magic. Schwab has a way of putting words to a page that is incomparable to other authors. The wit that underpins her snarky characters is first class, and Lila is a prime example. What makes it so great is that Lila doesn’t try hard — it’s who she is. A Gathering of Shadows increased my love for her, Kell, and Rhy manifolds, and also sucked me right into the spheres of Alucard and Tieren.

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J. Maas

September 10, 2015

Book cover & rating - A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J MaasThinking about A Court of Thorns and Roses evokes a whole range of emotions in me — all negative. Of the books I’ve read this year, only The Miniaturist received a lower rating from me. After accounting for all my variables (prose, characterisation, plot, depth, originality, impact & voice), my final rating is a measly 0.857 out of 5. Rounded up that means 1 star.
