WINDFALL by Jennifer E. Smith

June 24, 2017

Book cover & rating - WINDFALL by Jennifer E SmithWindfall is a book that’s bound to appeal to fans of slow burn romance. There’s no love at first sight, but feelings that Alice harboured for years on end. Friendships came first, which I enjoyed, and all that followed unfolded at good pace. I have to say, of the four books I’ve read by Jennifer E. Smith, Windfall is my favourite so far. The character development was solid, even if the characters themselves weren’t the most likeable.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: american authors, choices, conduct of life, cousins, family, friendship, grief, high school, lgbtq characters, lottery, orphans, volunteering

A QUIET KIND OF THUNDER by Sara Barnard

January 15, 2017

Book cover & rating – A QUIET KIND OF THUNDER by Sara BarnardBefore A Quiet Kind of Thunder, I had never read a book involving a character with selective mutism, nor a character who is deaf. It didn’t occur to me previously that I hadn’t until I had the opportunity to review this book. I was a little unsure if I would like it because it’s primarily a romance novel. On the flip side, Sara Barnard wrote this and I really enjoyed her debut, Beautiful Broken Things, so I was still curious.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: ableism, accidents, alcoholism, anxiety, bi- or multiracial characters, british authors, dating, deafness, depression, disability, discrimination, diversity, divorced parents, friendship, grief, high school, hospital, mental health, racism, running, selective mutism

THE TWELVE DAYS OF DASH AND LILY by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

December 22, 2016

Book cover & rating -THE TWELVE DAYS OF DASH AND LILY by Rachel Cohn & David LevithanThis book does not live up to the preceding Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares. I’ve listened to the audiobook, and reread the paperback. I’m sure I’ll reread it again in future. The Twelve Days of Dash & Lily, however, is a book I most likely won’t revisit. It’s neither quirky nor charming — the very reasons I enjoy Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares. These elements went completely missing in this long-awaited sequel.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: accidents, alternative perspectives, american authors, baking, christmas, diversity, divorce, drugs, family life, family problems, friendship, grandparents, hospital, lgbtq characters, on love, realistic fiction, relationships, siblinghood, stress, winter

OUR CHEMICAL HEARTS by Krystal Sutherland

September 8, 2016

Book cover & rating - OUR CHEMICAL HEARTS by Krystal SutherlandIn the first chapter Henry, the protagonist, introduces Our Chemical Hearts as kind of a love story. Kind of a love story, it is. It also is a remarkable eloquent book on heartbreak and love in various forms — romantic, friendly, parental, and so on.
