THESE SHALLOW GRAVES by Jennifer Donnelly

November 1, 2017

Book cover & rating - THESE SHALLOW GRAVES by Jennifer DonnellyWhen mystery meets historical fiction, you can be almost certain that the book will be exciting. This was definitely the case for These Shallow Graves. The moody 19th century setting fit perfectly with the murder mystery plot.

A SEMI DEFINITIVE LIST OF WORST NIGHTMARES by Krystal Sutherland

Book cover & rating - A SEMI DEFINITIVE LIST OF WORST NIGHTMARES by Krystal Sutherland

A Semi Definitive List of Worst Nightmares was yet another book from Krystal Sutherland that made me cry. Something about the way she writes and crafts her characters make them so relatable. The emotions are so palpable, it’s impossible not to feel something for the characters. I think that’s what made this book particularly great. There was nuance in the way mental health was dealt with several times over.

GIRLS MADE OF SNOW AND GLASS by Melissa Bashardoust

October 10, 2017

Book cover & rating - GIRLS MADE OF SNOW AND GLASS by Melissa BashardoustGirls Made of Snow and Glass is a retelling of retellings, a simulacrum if you will. After all, it was inspired by Frozen, Snow White and the Huntsman and The Bloody Chamber. Despite the extent to which this book was built on multiple stories, I thought the world building as well as the plot showcased Bashardoust’s creativity. The setting in particular, charmed me, and I loved how well it was woven together with the overarching plot.

THE LONELIEST GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE by Lauren James

September 13, 2017

Book cover & rating - THE LONELIEST GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE by Lauren JamesWhen I first read the synopsis of The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, I expected an epic romance set in space. That wasn’t quite what the book was but I did like the direction it took. What I didn’t realise at first was that The Loneliest Girl in the Universe isn’t only science fiction but a psychological thriller as well.

DEFY THE STARS by Claudia Gray

September 7, 2017

Book cover & rating - DEFY THE STARS by Claudia GrayFor better or for worse, the UK book cover of Defy the Stars isn’t befitting of the story. Romance isn’t central to the plot. The overarching theme was what constitutes humanity, which I thought was explored exceedingly well in this book. It was also about sacrifice to save others and the chase to live forever.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: american authors, artificial-intelligence, autonomy, beliefs, choices, crime, death, faith, friendship, futuristic, grief, on love, philosophy, robots, sacrifice, space opera, space travel, terrorism, war
