Let’s call this week the last hurrah before the holidays. For the rest of December, there won’t be that many releases. If you’re looking for new books to gift for Christmas, this week’s titles are pretty much under the radar. Perfect if you want to present the bibliophiles in your life with books they don’t own yet and most likely won’t be receiving from anyone else either.
Retrospect #100: November 29
Say hey! I’m into the hundredth week of Retrospect! I didn’t actually write a hundred Retrospect posts since I bundled quite a number of them into double, triple and even quadruple(!) editions. But point is, a hundred weeks have at least sort of been accounted for. For someone who’s never been good at regularly updating a diary, I call this an achievement.
Is a DSLR Necessary for Book Photography?
Once in a while I see people lament that they don’t have a good camera to take photos. They wish they had a snazzy DSLR with which they could take nicer photos for bookstagram. The thing is, as beautiful as photos taken with DSLRs can be, it’s not just about the camera. Yes, clarity and sharpness do matter, so a good camera does make a difference. However, in many cases our smartphone cameras are good enough to produce quality photos.
Mise-en-scène: Wistfulness
Wistfulness and dreams for me go hand in hand. That’s why Dreamfire by Kit Alloway came to mind. I have yet to read it and I have no idea if there’s anything wistful about the story. Still, the synopsis does talk about the entering of other people’s dreams, so there’s that — reaching for something that is bygone or isn’t even yours is the epitome of wistfulness. That vague dreamy cover of someone seemingly freefalling just adds to the whole vibe, so there we go.
Frankfurt Book Fair 2015, Vol. 3: The Friends
Amidst all the books and programmes at the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBM), I did also meet people. Friends are more than half the fun at events like these and I gotta say, I’m exceedingly thankful for the company I had. There aren’t all that many photos since the lot of us is pretty camera-shy, but I did get a few snapshots.
