THE FINAL EMPIRE by Brandon Sanderson

April 20, 2016

Book cover & rating - The Final Empire by Brandon SandersonIf I could only use one word to review The Final Empire, I would pick brilliant! Indeed, it is a brilliant book. The world building was impeccable and the laws of nature in this world were very exacting. What set it apart was the impact of metals and how they could be controlled through Allomancy and Feruchemy. These two systems had such logic and were so consistent that by the end of the book, I instinctively knew the outcomes of manipulating various metals.

MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Book cover & rating - MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE by Taylor Jenkins Reid

After Why?, I’m certain the most popular question is, What if? Second-guessing our choices is human nature. Maybe in Another Life taps precisely on this. What if Hannah chooses to do one thing? What is she goes with the alternative instead? Maybe in Another Life presents two options and how they could possibly turn out differently. These alternative outcomes are told though concurrent storylines.

Review Anthology #1: Mental Illness — Girl, Interrupted | Finding Audrey | The Law of Loving Others | All the Bright PlacesAs I browsed through all the titles of books that I read last year, I realized that there were a lot of them that I didn’t share here on the blog (yet). Some of these were books that I thought were fairly important and I always meant to feature.

THE CHRISTMAS MYSTERY by Jostein Gaarder

December 24, 2015

Book cover & rating - The Christmas Mystery by Jostein GaarderIt’s Christmas Eve and so the Advent season is practically over. The same goes for The Christmas Mystery. While I’ve owned it for about ten years (probably more), I’ve never actually read it. This year I finally picked it up and used it as an Advent calendar. I must say, I’m glad I did. While I forgot my chocolates half-way through last year, there’s no way I could forget a book.

THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald

September 14, 2015

Book cover of THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott FitzgeraldI am so glad I didn’t study English Literature at A Levels. The Great Gatsby was a set text for the exams and after finally reading this novel, I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed taking it apart. I have a friend who absolutely adored The Great Gatsby back then and still avidly references it in his conversations with people. Frankly, I don’t see the appeal.
