ON THE COME UP by Angie Thomas

February 20, 2019

Book cover & and 5-star rating for ON THE COME UP by Angie ThomasBooks about music usually are full of heart and soul. On the Come Up is no exception. In fact, it far surpassed more than a few of such books I’ve loved before. On that front, I actually am a bit surprised. I knew that coming from Angie Thomas, this one would be a good book. However, hip hop isn’t generally on my radar, so I did go in with slightly tempered expectations.

SUMMER BIRD BLUE by Akemi Dawn Bowman

January 28, 2019

Book cover & 3-star rating - SUMMER BIRD BLUE by Akemi Dawn BowmanI was pretty excited when my hold on the audiobook of Summer Bird Blue came through on Overdrive. I knew that the main character was biracial, and since I am too, I’m constantly seeking out out such identities in book.

REVOLUTION by Jennifer Donnelly

January 28, 2016

Book cover & rating - REVOLUTION by Jennifer DonnellyRevolution presented the obsession with music and 18th-century France in the face of post-traumatic stress disorder and mental illness. The combination of these added so many layers, I was immersed in Revolution for the entire duration of the audiobook. Living in contemporary times, Andi’s grief over the loss of her brother was palpable as she and her mother had completely fallen apart.

THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE by Leila Sales

December 5, 2015

Book cover of This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila SalesThere’s so much that spoke to me when I read This Song Will Save Your Life. For this I loved it very, very dearly. It reminded me why I crave stories and why I can care so much about fictional people. Elise was my girl. She reminded me that I’m not alone and never have been. All that bullying I went through in high school, searching for acceptance, wanting to be someone — these aren’t alien experience to many of us. Despite that, resultant feelings of loneliness can be very overwhelming. This Song Will Save Your Life tapped into that psyche and spun a raw and engaging tale.

GET HAPPY by Mary Amato

November 19, 2014

GET HAPPY by Mary AmatoGet Happy is such a sweet book with the right amount of conflict and tension. I liked Minerva right from the start. She was kinda bratty at first but a very self-aware brat fluent in sarcasm, so reading this book amused me tremendously.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: american authors, family, family myth, family problems, friendship, high school, lyrics, music, realistic fiction, romance, single parenthood, solid platonic friendship
