HOW TO FIND LOVE IN THE LITTLE THINGS by Virginie Grimaldi

February 26, 2019

Book cover & and 4.5-star rating for HOW TO FIND LOVE IN THE LITTLE THINGS by Virginie GrimaldiDepending on how you look at it, quarter- and midlife crises books can add to the disillusion or be rather cathartic. Personally, I thought How to Find Love in the Little Things tended towards the cathartic.

ON THE COME UP by Angie Thomas

February 20, 2019

Book cover & and 5-star rating for ON THE COME UP by Angie ThomasBooks about music usually are full of heart and soul. On the Come Up is no exception. In fact, it far surpassed more than a few of such books I’ve loved before. On that front, I actually am a bit surprised. I knew that coming from Angie Thomas, this one would be a good book. However, hip hop isn’t generally on my radar, so I did go in with slightly tempered expectations.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: ambition, american authors, assault, dating, diverse authors, diverse books, gangs, gay characters, grandparents, high school, hip hop, hope, lgbtq characters, mothers and daughters, music, musicians, organised crime, poc characters, poverty, queer characters, relatives, religious institutions, siblinghood, single parenthood, solid platonic friendship, surveillance, violence

SUMMER BIRD BLUE by Akemi Dawn Bowman

January 28, 2019

Book cover & 3-star rating - SUMMER BIRD BLUE by Akemi Dawn BowmanI was pretty excited when my hold on the audiobook of Summer Bird Blue came through on Overdrive. I knew that the main character was biracial, and since I am too, I’m constantly seeking out out such identities in book.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: accidents, ace characters, bi- or multiracial characters, car accident, death, diverse authors, diverse books, friendship, grief, lgbtq characters, memories, mothers and daughters, music, poc characters, relatives, selfish characters, sexuality, siblinghood, single parenthood, sisters, summer, whiny characters

NOT THE GIRLS YOU’RE LOOKING FOR by Aminah Mae Safi

October 6, 2018

Book cover & rating - NOT THE GIRLS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR by Aminah Mae SafiNot the Girls You’re Looking For is way more hard hitting than I had expected. Based on the synopsis I thought it’d be a fun, fluffy high school read with a dash of drama. Sure, there’s drama and the prose is typical of that sort of book but it is a whole lot more intense.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: american authors, bi- or multiracial characters, dating, diverse authors, diverse books, family, friendship, high school, muslim characters, ramadan, relatives, religion, romance, social media

REBEL OF THE SANDS by Alwyn Hamilton

February 11, 2018

Book cover & rating - REBEL OF THE SANDS by Alwyn HamiltonThe first 200 pages were not written well. I was bored and felt growing discomfort with the mangled Middle Eastern culture this fantasy book was premised on. At least the next 150 odd pages picked up a little in terms of plot and also storytelling, so I didn’t end up thoroughly hating Rebel of the Sands. Still, this book has so many problems, I’m relieved I didn’t order the sequels before finishing this one first.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: ableist, abuse, alcoholism, assault, beliefs, betrayal, canadian authors, choices, cousins, death, disability, diverse books, domestic violence, ethics, family, gender, ghouls, half-siblings, identity, insurgency, jinn, magic, murder, mythology, on the run, poc characters, relatives, religion, romance, royalty, secrets, self discovery, shapeshifting, siblinghood, truth, violence
