SUMMER BIRD BLUE by Akemi Dawn Bowman

January 28, 2019

Book cover & 3-star rating - SUMMER BIRD BLUE by Akemi Dawn BowmanI was pretty excited when my hold on the audiobook of Summer Bird Blue came through on Overdrive. I knew that the main character was biracial, and since I am too, I’m constantly seeking out out such identities in book.

THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF OKAY by Laura Steven

March 20, 2018

Book cover & rating - THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF OKAY by Laura StevenIzzy was such a refreshing and hilarious character. Her personality shone through the blog posts and her annotations on hindsight. Once in a while, the details she shared bordered on TMI (too much information) but in a diary sort of blog that’s not exactly unusual. If you like no holds barred narrations that flow with stream of consciousness, you’ll be in stitches laughing over The Exact Opposite of Okay.

THE BIG LIE by Julie Mayhew

September 17, 2015

Book cover of THE BIG LIE by Julie MayhewSet in Nazi England, 2012–2014, The Big Lie is premised on one question: What if the Nazis had won World War II? With this in mind, The Big Lie is a speculative work of alternative history. While nobody can say for sure how things would’ve turned out, I think the world that Julie Mayhew imagined is a rather plausible outcome. She evidently did her research and wove together the fascist ideals and lifestyles of the 1940s with contemporary ones.

CLEAN by Amy Reed

June 23, 2015

Book cover of CLEAN by Amy ReedClean is a book that thoroughly surprised me. Firstly, I thought this book would be about mental illness. Actually it’s about addiction. I should’ve realized that before I started reading but as usual, I hardly glanced at the synopsis. Secondly, I was impressed with how the characters were portrayed in terms of depth, development and voice. Best of all, I was amazed by the writing style. It was on the experimental side, which I hadn’t expected.
