THESE SHALLOW GRAVES by Jennifer Donnelly

November 1, 2017

Book cover & rating - THESE SHALLOW GRAVES by Jennifer DonnellyWhen mystery meets historical fiction, you can be almost certain that the book will be exciting. This was definitely the case for These Shallow Graves. The moody 19th century setting fit perfectly with the murder mystery plot.

STAGS by M.A. Bennett

August 16, 2017

Book cover & rating - STAGS by M.A. BennettSTAGS isn’t a conventional “whodunnit” mystery novel. It’s clear from the opening sentence that someone died. But who? Now, that’s the question! Sadly, I figured that out way too early, so the mystery aspect didn’t grip me quite as much as I’d have liked. Thankfully, there still was more to the book than meets the eye — some really twisted events and towards the end, some sinister foreshadowing of the future.

TROUBLE MAKES A COMEBACK by Stephanie Tromly

Book cover & rating - TROUBLE MAKES A COMEBACK by Stephanie Tromly
Trouble Makes a Comeback was exactly the sequel that it needed to be. When I read the first book, Trouble is a Friend of Mine, I was disappointed about the open ending. Back then, I only knew of it as a standalone book. When Hot Key Books reached out, asking me if I’d be interested in reviewing this sequel, I was excited to learn that Trouble is a series. Right now, I can’t wait for the third book to come out.

THE GOOD IMMIGRANT edited by Nikesh Shukla

December 1, 2016

Book cover & rating - THE GOOD IMMIGRANT edited by Nikesh ShuklaInitially I meant to write a pure book review, assessing the merits of The Good Immigrant. Considering how much of my own existence is reflected in these essays, I felt compelled to go beyond that.

BLUESCREEN by Dan Wells

March 10, 2016

Book cover & rating - Bluescreen by Dan WellsBluescreen was a fast-paced mystery rooted in science fiction. Set in the near future, the setting felt immediate yet very much more advanced. A lot of the communication technology and technology as a whole reflected current imaginations of what could be possible in a couple of decades. I thought Bluescreen tapped on that technological knowledge very well and injected some creativity as well.
