MY SINGAPORE LOVER by Judy Chapman

May 29, 2014

MY SINGAPORE LOVER by Judy ChapmanI visited the library earlier today, fully determined to check out the Singapore collection. Faced with the fiction shelf of Singapore literature, this one bright blue spine popped out, so I took it from the shelf. Turns out it was My Singapore Lover. While I didn’t really know what it was about, I had seen copies of that book on display at bookstores. I thus started to read the book. 20 pages in, I already wanted to chuck it aside. Nothing really grabbed me but I didn’t want to make snap judgements. Plus, My Singapore Lover was published fairly recently, which I figured fits in squarely with Crazy Rich Asians, another book set in Singapore that was published last year. (I have yet to read it.)

OUT OF THE EASY by Ruta Sepetys

February 24, 2014

Historical Fiction is not usually my preferred genre. Unless the history that is involved is from two centuries ago or so, then I’m more likely to reconsider picking up such a book. Recent history though is not one of my preferences when it comes to fiction. Maybe I’m still hung on choosing to study History…

December 31, 2013

Out of Tune is the last book I finished reading before the new year, and I am glad that it is also the last one I get to review this year because it’s a good book to remember the end of 2013 by. I thoroughly enjoyed it for the depth it offers alongside the roller…

ROOMIES by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando

December 4, 2013

Oh the liminality of the summer between high school and college! Sorry, I just had to use the term liminality outside of school. But it is an apt definition of where Elizabeth and Lauren are. A stage of in-between, of neither here nor there. It is also those in-between stages that tend to go unnoticed, so I…

INTENTIONS by Deborah Heiligman

October 29, 2013

Rachel, as with everyone else in the community, adored Rabbi Cohn. He was her role model and a seemingly charming man. Whenever he led services, she would lap up every single word he said. In her eyes, he was perfect and he could do no wrong. That is, until the day she reached the temple…
