THE YELLOW ROOM by Jess Vallance

August 11, 2016

Book cover & rating - THE YELLOW ROOM by Jess VallanceWhen i first requested The Yellow Room for review, I had rather vague expectations. I hadn’t heard or seen any of my friends mention it but it’s published under Hot Key Books, so I figured the intrigue must be justified. And indeed, it was! The keywords tagged to this book were “lies, truth, sanity and yellow”. What I didn’t know was coming was the sheer madness of the story!

THE GIRL AT MIDNIGHT by Melissa Grey

August 3, 2016

Book cover & rating - THE GIRL AT MIDNIGHT by Melissa GreyThe overlapping elements between The Girl at Midnight and Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is uncanny. If you’ve read and loved DoSaB, you may be overjoyed that there’s another book out there with similar tropes. On the flip side, you may not like it at all because DoSaB was built with much more lyrical prose.

ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

July 27, 2016

Book cover & rating - ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSEAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe was beautiful! I’ve had the hardcover on my bookshelves for over two years. I also knew that Lin-Manuel Miranda was an excellent narrator. But the more people told me to read it, the more I put it off. Yes, I blame my irrational brain. I wanted to read it but then I refused because others encouraged me to. Thankfully, Hazel picked it for our June Epic Recs, so I couldn’t deny her pick. I went on to alternate between print and audio.

THE WELL OF ASCENSION by Brandon Sanderson

July 15, 2016

Book cover & rating - The Well of Ascension by Brandon SandersonThe Well of Ascension was an amazing sequel! It carried on with the rich detail that The Final Empire introduced. I loved learning even more about Scadrial and advancing my understanding of Allomancy and Feruchemy.

THE DARK DAYS CLUB by Alison Goodman

July 5, 2016

Book cover & rating - THE DARK DAYS CLUB by Alison GoodmanWhen I first heard of The Dark Days Club, I was intrigued. Though I hadn’t read Jane Austen novels nor any of the popular series of Cassandra Clare, I knew those names held promise. Yes, Alison Goodman is an author unto herself but sometimes it’s hard to discount influences. With that, I first picked up Pride & Prejudice. It took me more than a month to reach page 84 before I got too exasperated and put it on hold. I didn’t try City of Bones. I dove into The Dark Days Club, not wanting to postpone it too long.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: death, friendship, monsters, murder, regency, romance
