Cut the Lights by Karen Krossing

January 14, 2016

Book cover & rating: Cut the Lights by Karen KrossingWhen it comes to contemporary fiction, I love books with protagonists who have ambition and passion for something. Cut the Lights fully delivered in that department. Drama and theatre were the main focus and very little detracted from that. I think in part that stemmed from the shortness of the book. The length didn’t allow for much else beyond theatre, which means there were no unnecessary distractions.

Review Anthology #1: Mental Illness

Review Anthology #1: Mental Illness — Girl, Interrupted | Finding Audrey | The Law of Loving Others | All the Bright PlacesAs I browsed through all the titles of books that I read last year, I realized that there were a lot of them that I didn’t share here on the blog (yet). Some of these were books that I thought were fairly important and I always meant to feature.

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR by Julie Maroh

December 16, 2015

Book cover & rating - Blue is the Warmest Color by Julie MarohRight from the first beginning we’re told that the main character, Clementine is dead. We relive her life through her diary entries. It was evident right from the start that Blue is the Warmest Color is a sad book but it wasn’t cheapened by shocking anyone with Clementine’s death. No, this graphic novel focused on the journey. In doing so, it shed light on her hopes and dreams, and struggles and despair.

· Categories: Graphic Novels Keywords: cheating, death, epistolary, family problems, friendship, high school, homophobia, self discovery, self perception, self-esteem

FALLING INTO PLACE by Amy Zhang

November 14, 2015

Audiobook cover of FALLING INTO PLACE by Amy ZhangWhen I first finished reading Falling into Place, I didn’t know how to rate it. It spoke to me in the most painful manner. No other book in recent memory has made me cry so much. When I wasn’t crying, I was on the verge of tears. The rest of the time I was uncomfortable. Liz wasn’t a nice person and yet I felt a connection because a lot of her thoughts had been mine before.

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J. Maas

September 10, 2015

Book cover & rating - A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J MaasThinking about A Court of Thorns and Roses evokes a whole range of emotions in me — all negative. Of the books I’ve read this year, only The Miniaturist received a lower rating from me. After accounting for all my variables (prose, characterisation, plot, depth, originality, impact & voice), my final rating is a measly 0.857 out of 5. Rounded up that means 1 star.

· Categories: Epic Recs, Fiction Keywords: abuse, american authors, art, betrayal, blackmail, death, drugs, faeries, family, family problems, kidnapping, lies, magic, mind control, murder, poverty, remorse, retellings, revenge, secrets, sisters, survival, violence, wealth
