THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas

November 26, 2017

Book cover & rating - THE HATE U GIVE by Angie ThomasNo contest, The Hate U Give is the best young adult novel that was published in 2017. It’s filled with heart and soul, takes an honest look at racial discrimination, and doesn’t hold back any punches. It’s so honest and raw that it hurts to read and it’s precisely because of that that everyone and anyone, young or old, needs to read The Hate U Give.

THESE SHALLOW GRAVES by Jennifer Donnelly

November 1, 2017

Book cover & rating - THESE SHALLOW GRAVES by Jennifer DonnellyWhen mystery meets historical fiction, you can be almost certain that the book will be exciting. This was definitely the case for These Shallow Graves. The moody 19th century setting fit perfectly with the murder mystery plot.

THE LONELIEST GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE by Lauren James

September 13, 2017

Book cover & rating - THE LONELIEST GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE by Lauren JamesWhen I first read the synopsis of The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, I expected an epic romance set in space. That wasn’t quite what the book was but I did like the direction it took. What I didn’t realise at first was that The Loneliest Girl in the Universe isn’t only science fiction but a psychological thriller as well.

STAGS by M.A. Bennett

August 16, 2017

Book cover & rating - STAGS by M.A. BennettSTAGS isn’t a conventional “whodunnit” mystery novel. It’s clear from the opening sentence that someone died. But who? Now, that’s the question! Sadly, I figured that out way too early, so the mystery aspect didn’t grip me quite as much as I’d have liked. Thankfully, there still was more to the book than meets the eye — some really twisted events and towards the end, some sinister foreshadowing of the future.

A SHADOW BRIGHT AND BURNING by Jessica Cluess

June 29, 2017

Book cover & rating - A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica CluessWhen I first stumbled across A Shadow Bright and Burning, I passed right over it. After some time though, the hype wore me down, and curiosity got the better of me. I looked up chapter samplers, and was hooked.
