THOSE GIRLS by Lauren Saft

June 19, 2015

Book cover of THOSE GIRLS by Lauren SaftThere are so many reasons to hate Those Girls. Yet when I step away from the content and simply think about the structure of Those Girls as a novel, it actually holds up pretty well. This is why I think Lauren Saft has what it takes to become a successful author but I don’t have it in me to like this book much.

BELZHAR by Meg Wolitzer

Book cover of BELZHAR by Meg WolitzerOne of the books I most looked forward to in 2014 was Belzhar. When I first saw the US cover, I was taken in and when I read the short description, I was sold. I wanted to read the book. It didn’t matter to me that I had never read a word of Sylvia Plath because I had every intention to. (For the record, I read The Bell Jar before Belzhar to preempt spoilers. Hah.) The hook for me was the exploration of mental stability.

ASHES TO ASHES (Burn for Burn #3) by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

December 22, 2014

ASHES TO ASHES (Burn for Burn #3) by Jenny Han & Siobhan VivianI did not see this coming. I thoroughly enjoyed Burn for Burn and Fire with Fire. Ashes to Ashes, however, left me cold. I was already 84% through the book and yet I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. That thought keeps nagging at me but reading the last few chapters would for me be a waste of time.

GET HAPPY by Mary Amato

November 19, 2014

GET HAPPY by Mary AmatoGet Happy is such a sweet book with the right amount of conflict and tension. I liked Minerva right from the start. She was kinda bratty at first but a very self-aware brat fluent in sarcasm, so reading this book amused me tremendously.

THIS SIDE OF SALVATION by Jeri Smith-Ready

September 25, 2014

THIS SIDE OF SALVATION by Jeri Smith-ReadyThis Side of Salvation had a lot going for it. Sports, school, religion and romance — all things that are important to a sixteen-year-old. David had a bright future ahead of him in baseball. He trained just as hard for it off-season as he did during his seasons. College scouts were on the look-out for him and his high school coach had taught David all he could.
