Review Anthology #1: Mental Illness

January 2, 2016

Review Anthology #1: Mental Illness — Girl, Interrupted | Finding Audrey | The Law of Loving Others | All the Bright PlacesAs I browsed through all the titles of books that I read last year, I realized that there were a lot of them that I didn’t share here on the blog (yet). Some of these were books that I thought were fairly important and I always meant to feature.

WINTER by Marissa Meyer

December 19, 2015

Book cover & rating - Winter by Marissa MeyerWinter’s release was postponed by many months, leading to lots of sadness all around. As consolation, we received Fairest (#3.5) earlier this year to ease the waiting. Now the question is, was it worth waiting so long for Winter? I say, definitely! For one, it takes a lot of time to write 824 pages. It also takes a very long time to edit these pages to perfection.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: ambition, american authors, androids, censorship, cyborgs, death, discrimination, friendship, genetic engineering, illnesses, impersonation, insurgency, lies, loyalty, mental health, mind control, murder, orphans, poverty, retellings, revolution, romance, royalty, self perception, solid platonic friendship, surveillance, survival, violence, wealth, weddings

FALLING INTO PLACE by Amy Zhang

November 14, 2015

Audiobook cover of FALLING INTO PLACE by Amy ZhangWhen I first finished reading Falling into Place, I didn’t know how to rate it. It spoke to me in the most painful manner. No other book in recent memory has made me cry so much. When I wasn’t crying, I was on the verge of tears. The rest of the time I was uncomfortable. Liz wasn’t a nice person and yet I felt a connection because a lot of her thoughts had been mine before.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: alcoholism, audiobooks, bullying, cheating, death, despair, drug abuse, drugs, experimental writing, family problems, friendship, grief, guilt, high school, mental health, realistic fiction, single parenthood, soccer, sports, suicide

THE REST OF US JUST LIVE HERE by Patrick Ness

August 24, 2015

Book cover of The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick NessGoing into The Rest of Us Just Live Here I felt very disconcerted. The main text reads like a contemporary book but each chapter starts with insights on the Chosen Ones and the gods above. There are however overlaps that can be seen when the paranormal events have an impact on the ordinary people. This makes the setting a very strange yet familiar one.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: alcoholism, anxiety, bi- or multiracial characters, death, eating disorder, existentialism, family problems, friendship, genre-fantasy, high school, mental health, metafiction, multiculturalism, ocd, on love, paranormal, politics, postmodernism, romance, self-esteem, siblinghood, therapy

CLEAN by Amy Reed

June 23, 2015

Book cover of CLEAN by Amy ReedClean is a book that thoroughly surprised me. Firstly, I thought this book would be about mental illness. Actually it’s about addiction. I should’ve realized that before I started reading but as usual, I hardly glanced at the synopsis. Secondly, I was impressed with how the characters were portrayed in terms of depth, development and voice. Best of all, I was amazed by the writing style. It was on the experimental side, which I hadn’t expected.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: abuse, addiction, alcoholism, american authors, beliefs, bullying, christianity, delinquency, depression, drug abuse, drugs, eating disorder, experimental writing, faith, family problems, friendship, health, mental health, psychology, realistic fiction, rehab, religion, self discovery, self harm, self perception, sexuality, sociology, therapy
