Clean is a book that thoroughly surprised me. Firstly, I thought this book would be about mental illness. Actually it’s about addiction. I should’ve realized that before I started reading but as usual, I hardly glanced at the synopsis. Secondly, I was impressed with how the characters were portrayed in terms of depth, development and voice. Best of all, I was amazed by the writing style. It was on the experimental side, which I hadn’t expected.
THOSE GIRLS by Lauren Saft
There are so many reasons to hate Those Girls. Yet when I step away from the content and simply think about the structure of Those Girls as a novel, it actually holds up pretty well. This is why I think Lauren Saft has what it takes to become a successful author but I don’t have it in me to like this book much.
END OF DAYS (Penryn and the End of Days #3) by Susan Ee
Reading End of Days made me wish Angelfall was a standalone. The series of Penryn and the End of Days held so much promise, especially with Angelfall, which I found very original with its unconventional portrayal of angels.
FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury
How does one even review classics? I think it hardly matters what a singular person like me thinks and blogs about them. Classics have been scrutinised till their words ran dry, I’m sure. Whether I like it or not probably doesn’t matter to anyone when deciding to read classics.
GRAFFITI MOON by Cath Crowley
My favourite undergrad project was graffiti. I spent an entire semester studying the subculture of graffiti, which was a more than colourful endeavour. What I noticed then was the lack of representation of graffiti in YA literature. Perhaps it’s the deviant nature of it that precludes it from being written about so freely? Or maybe it’s also the difficulty of access, which could be limiting authors’ understanding of graffiti.
