DEFY THE STARS by Claudia Gray

September 7, 2017

Book cover & rating - DEFY THE STARS by Claudia GrayFor better or for worse, the UK book cover of Defy the Stars isn’t befitting of the story. Romance isn’t central to the plot. The overarching theme was what constitutes humanity, which I thought was explored exceedingly well in this book. It was also about sacrifice to save others and the chase to live forever.

A SHADOW BRIGHT AND BURNING by Jessica Cluess

June 29, 2017

Book cover & rating - A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica CluessWhen I first stumbled across A Shadow Bright and Burning, I passed right over it. After some time though, the hype wore me down, and curiosity got the better of me. I looked up chapter samplers, and was hooked.

THE INEXPLICABLE LOGIC OF MY LIFE by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

June 20, 2017

Book cover & rating - The Inexplicable Logic of my LifeAfter reading and enjoying Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe last year, I couldn’t wait for The Inexplicable Logic of My Life to be released. On several counts, Sáenz’s book lived up to my expectations. The prose, though simple, once again was stellar! I love introspective characters, and after reading two books from Sáenz, I’m convinced that he’s a master at writing them. And while single parents are ubiquitous in YA fiction, Sal had an adoptive father who was gay, thereby expanding representation for non-traditional families.

SPELLSLINGER by Sebastien de Castell

June 7, 2017

Book cover & rating - Spellslinger by Sebastien de CastellSpellslinger is a rather quirky book, which I enjoyed very much. A young mage who’s struggling with magic, a traveller passing through who can’t keep her hilarious social commentary to herself, and a snarky talking squirrel cat? This combination was most peculiar, making me laugh and smirk throughout.

THE ALLOY OF LAW by Brandon Sanderson

March 30, 2017

Book cover & rating - The Alloy of Law by Brandon SandersonI can’t think of another fantasy book I’ve read that was as much fun as The Alloy of Law. It made me chuckle a lot, particularly because of Wayne. He’s hilarious and makes the most inappropriate yet fitting comments. Some part nearly had me in stitches. At the same time, The Alloy of Law reads like a crime fantasy novel.

· Categories: Fiction Keywords: action, american authors, beliefs, crime, death, friendship, humour, kidnapping, loyalty, morality, snarky characters, violence
